Former Cuban President Fidel Castro dies at the age of 90

The great Cuban revolutionary, Fidel Castro has died at the age of 90.

According to his brother, President Paul Castro, "The commander in chief of the Cuban revolution died at 22:29 hours this evening (03:29 GMT Saturday)."
Fidel Castro ruled Cuba as a one-party state for almost 50 years before he handed over to his brother Raul in 2008 due to a gastrointestinal ailment which forced him to hand over the presidency to provisionally at first and then permanently.

Fidel Castro Ruz was born Aug. 13, 1926. He attended the University of Havana, where he bagged degrees in law and social science. His life as a rebel began in 1953 with a reckless attack on the Moncada military barracks in the eastern city of Santiago.

"I'll be 90 years old soon," Castro said at an April 2016 communist party congress where he made his most extensive public appearance in years. "Soon I'll be like all the others. The time will come for all of us, but the ideas of the Cuban Communists will remain as proof that on this planet, if one works with fervor and dignity, they can produce the material and cultural goods that human beings need and that need to be fought for without ever giving up."

Video: Archaeologists expose the tomb of Jesus Christ for the first time

Archaeologists have exposed the original surface of what is traditionally considered the tomb of Jesus Christ for the first time.

The most venerated site in the Christian world, the tomb today consists of a limestone shelf or burial bed that was hewn from the wall of a cave. Since at least 1555, and most likely centuries earlier, the burial bed has been covered in marble cladding, allegedly to prevent eager pilgrims from removing bits of the original rock as souvenirs.

When the marble cladding was first removed on the night of October 26, an initial inspection by the conservation team from the National Technical University of Athens showed only a layer of fill material underneath. However, as researchers continued their nonstop work over the course of 60 hours, another marble slab with a cross carved into its surface was exposed. By the night of October 28, just hours before the tomb was to be resealed, the original limestone burial bed was revealed intact.

"I'm absolutely amazed. My knees are shaking a little bit because I wasn't expecting this,” said Fredrik Hiebert, National Geographic's archaeologist-in-residence.

Christians observe International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church today, 6th November

Christians all over the world are praying for persecuted christians today. Today is the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church 2016.

"At no other time in history have Christians been as persecuted as they are now," says Dr. Vernon Brewer, president and founder of the Christian humanitarian organization World Help, in a statement. "Some estimate more Christians have been martyred for their faith in the past century than in the previous 19 combined, and persecution in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia seems to be on the rise."

"From merciless killing, destruction of churches and buildings, to being forced to denounce Jesus as their Lord, Christians are being stripped of the ability to follow Christ in safety and freedom," says Open Doors USA on its website, urging Christians to join them in praying for the persecuted church on Sunday.

Brewer draws attention to the IDOP coming just two days before the U.S. Election Day.

5 unique ways people show affection in Eastern Nigeria

The eastern part of Nigeria, largely dominated by people from the Igbo tribe, is a unique place to visit or live in. Aside from serene environs stretched over the area and the generally low cost of living, there is a profound exhibition of culture and deep respect for customs and tradition; and this affects how the locals interact and relate with others around the country and world at large.

Basically, people living in the eastern area are far more emotionally reserved than their counterparts in the Western or Northern parts of the country and some visitors find this disconcerting. The truth, however, is that they can actually be both affectionate and demonstrative when it comes to showing affection, though, they may not show it in the way that is expected. To help visitors looking to understand the lifestyle of these people, Jumia Travel reveals 5 unique ways people in eastern Nigeria show affection.

Hail with praise names and titles

A very common way people in the eastern parts of Nigeria, especially Aba and Owerri, show affection is by hailing the person with fancy titles and praise phrases. Some of the popular appellations include Chief, Oga, odum, Eze e.t.c. They also use phrases that tend to exalt the person being referred to, such as “onye Isi” meaning “the man man”, “Nwoke ukwu” meaning “Big guy”.

Pope Francis reiterates ban on women ordained as Catholic Priests

Pope Francis speaks to journalists on his flight back to Rome following a visit at Armenia on June 26, 2016.
Pope Francis said on Tuesday he believes the Roman Catholic Church's ban on women becoming priests is forever and will never be changed, in some of his most definitive remarks on the issue.
He was speaking aboard a plane taking him back to Rome from Sweden, in the freewheeling news conference with reporters that has become a tradition of his return flights from trips abroad.
A Swedish female reporter noted that the head of the Lutheran Church who welcomed him in Sweden was a woman, and then asked if he thought the Catholic Church could allow women to be ordained as ministers in coming decades.
"St. Pope John Paul II had the last clear word on this and it stands, this stands," Francis said.

Francis was referring to a 1994 document by Pope John Paul that closed the door on a female priesthood. The Vatican says this teaching is an infallible part of Catholic tradition.
The reporter then pressed the pope, asking: "But forever, forever? Never, never?"
Francis responded: "If we read carefully the declaration by St. John Paul II, it is going in that direction."
Francis has previously said that the door to women's ordination is closed, but proponents of a female priesthood are hoping that a future pope might overturn the decision, particularly because of the shortage of priests around the world.
In reaction, The Women's Ordination Conference, a group that promotes a female priesthood, said in a statement that "Patriarchy Will Not Have the Last Word."
WOC said it was "profoundly disappointed" by the pope's comments, calling the document the pope referred to "outdated, fallible and painful".
The Catholic Church teaches that women cannot be ordained priests because Jesus willingly chose only men as his apostles. Those calling for women priests say he was only following the norms of his time.
"The Church cannot be afraid to examine customs when they no longer communicate or resonate with the Gospel. A Church that is not open to the gifts of half of its membership is unsustainable and out-of-touch with the needs of its people," WOC said.
In August, Francis set up a commission to study the role of women deacons in early Christianity, raising hopes among equality campaigners that women could one day have a greater say in the 1.2 billion-member Church.
Deacons, like priests, are ordained ministers and must be men. They cannot celebrate Mass, the Catholic Church's central rite, but they are allowed to preach and teach in the name of the Church, and to baptize and conduct wake and funeral services.
The Church barred women from becoming deacons centuries ago.
Scholars debate the precise role of women deacons in the early Church. Some say they were ordained to minister only to other women, for instance in baptismal immersion rites. Others believe they were on a par with male deacons.

CAN expresses reservation over court judgement on the murder of Mrs Bridget Agbahime

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in 19 Northern states and Abuja has expressed its reservation over the freedom of five suspects allegedly connected with the murder of late Mrs Bridget Agbahime.

74 year old Mrs Agbahime, wife of Mike Agbahime, a pastor of Deeper Life Bible Church was killed by a mob which accused her of blasphemy in June this year.

According to the association through its spokesperson in a statement, "the judgement had further brought the judiciary into serious attack."

The group stressed that more needed to be done to ensure the judiciary discharge its duty credibly.

The group further asked the Attorney General of the Federation to, as a matter of urgency, call the Kano State Attorney General to order to ensure that justice was seen to be done in the case. It said that the court judgement, which discharged the suspect, will encourage people to take laws into their hands since “evil is seen to be unpunished and many other groups would be tempted to harm or kill innocent citizens under any false guise since they can buy their freedom from the courts”.
