At the 88th Academy Awards which took place on Sunday, February 28, Spotlight won in the Best Picture Category.

Spotlight is a 2015 American biographical crime drama film  about an investigation into cases of widespread and systemic child sex abuse in the Boston area by numerous Roman Catholic priests.
"We would not be here today without the heroic efforts of our reporters," said producer Blye Pagon Faust in her acceptance speech. "Not only did they affect global change, but they absolutely show us the necessity for investigative journalism."

Producer, Michael Sugar, called on Pope Francis to focus on the Vatican's efforts on protecting children. According to Sugar when he came onstage to receive the award, "This film gave a voice to survivors and this Oscar amplifies that voice which we hope will become a choir that will resonate all the way to the Vatican. Pope Francis, it is time to protect the children and restore the faith."

Vatican Radio, the authoritative voice of the Vatican, had earlier praised the film for being "honest and compelling".

Thinking Infidelity?

I find many things troubling about our societal values. I can never truly understand how as a society we can measure wrongs based on gender. Many times when this lapse is pointed out, people are quick to talk about one being feministic but that really isn’t the issue. I am not about to write this post by unveiling my viciously feministic alter ego. No! I will spare you the pains of listening to my riddled thoughts on unbalanced scales of the genders.

I am not even going to go into details about how four married men at work were unashamedly bragging about their extra marital affairs. I am also not going to rant about how I find the fact, that the wife of one of the men packs him condoms, befuddling.

What is wrong with women not having standards? I am sorry I digressed.

I will try very much to keep this post devoid of pained feministic opinions. It is one intended for you to reflect on simple moral values.

I read of a woman who cheated on her husband of 23years after she found out that he bragged to one of his numerous mistresses that his wife was ok with his philandering ways. Of course, people judged her and told her just how shameless she is. One of the predominant questions most people asked is how a married woman can conceive such thought and carry such out.

Gospel Artiste Israel Houghton divorces wife, Meleasa after 20 years of marriage

Posted by Israel & New Breed on Monday, February 22, 2016
Here is his announcement

It is with a collective heavy heart that we announce that after over 20 years of marriage and a long separation, Meleasa and I are officially divorced. Several years ago I failed and sinned in my marriage. Though this is new to many, it is not new to us as we have been working through this for over 5 years. Although we tried, the challenges in our relationship have proven too much to overcome. We have always handled our family and ministry with grace and generosity toward others, discretion, and privacy. So, for the sake of our amazing kids, we are also handling this privately with pastoral oversight and assistance. We choose to remain friendly and kind to each other going forward. I am in the process of restoration and I have repented for my actions. Although I am sincerely sorry, and forgiven, I soberly realize that I will live with the consequences of my failings for the rest of my life. As this has become a public matter I want to apologize to the many who have supported my ministry through the years. I’m sorry for the many who will be hurt to learn of my personal failure. I regret any pain or disappointment that this news may cause you. We thank you for your prayers and for allowing us to handle this privately with those who are set over us in this process.
Prayerfully,
Israel Houghton

Our prayers go out to him and his wife during this trying period.

This is also a warning to all Christians that we need to watch and pray lest we fall.

Nike terminates Manny Pacquiao's endorsement deal over derogatory remarks about same-sex couples

Sports design and marketing giant, Nike, has parted ways with Manny Pacquiao over his recent remarks about same sex couples.

According to the company in a statement,
"We find Manny Pacquiao's comments abhorrent. Nike strongly opposes discrimination of any kind and has a long history of supporting and standing up for the rights of the LGBT community."
Based on Pacquiao's comments, a spokesman confirmed that he is no longer on the company's endorsement roster. Pacquiao, 37, had endorsed Nike for a little more than eight years.
Earlier in the week on a Filipino TV station, Manny had made the following statement

"Have you seen any animal having male-to-male or female-to-female relations?" Pacquiao said. "If you have male-to-male or female-to-female [relationships], then people are worse than animals."

However, Manny apologized on Twitter shortly after making the comment.

Pope Francis vs Donald Trump on Trump's Christianity

It all started when Pope Francis waded into American politics saying that Donald Trump “is not Christian” because of the harshness of his campaign promises to deport more immigrants and force Mexico to pay for a wall along the border.

“A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian,” Francis said when a reporter asked him about Mr. Trump on the papal airliner as he returned to Rome after his six-day visit to Mexico.

Trust Donald Trump to respond immediately. While at a campaign rally in Kiawah Island, S.C. he said: “For a religious leader to question a person’s faith is disgraceful.”

“No leader, especially a religious leader, has the right to question another man’s religion or faith,” he told a packed room at a golf course resort. Trump then accused the Mexican government of “using the pope as a pawn”.

Kirk Franklin responds to critics on his collaboration with Kanye West on Kanye's new album "The Life of Pablo"

This Instagram photo shows Christian rapper Kirk Franklin, second from left, in the studio for Kanye West's new album. (Instagram/TeamKanyeDaily)

Kirk Franklin has replied critics on his collaboration with Kanye West on a track "Ultra Light Beam" on Kanye's new album "This is Pablo". Christian critics have been denouncing the fact Kirk, a gospel artist did a collaboration with a secular musician like Kanye.  They are not appreciative of Kanye's kind of music which includes a lot of profanities and cursing.

Kanye seems to think otherwise.

West contends that it's a "gospel" album, and the opening track, "Ultra Light Beams" even enlists gospel crossover superstar Kirk "Stomp" Franklin to heighten the intensity of the occasion. But for West, gospel basically means forgiveness and family, regret and betrayal. He's the sinner who's always "apologin'," as he once put it. And as a result, there's a somber, swooning ambience to The Life of Pablo.

According to The New York Times review of the record, the first song on the album "Ultria Light Beams" features the gospel music artist, producer and songwriter praying.
"Indeed, the opening track, 'Ultra Light Beam,' features the gospel singer Kirk Franklin, along with Mr. West's fellow Chicago M.C. Chance the Rapper. 'This is a god dream," Mr. West raps, adding later: 'Pray for Paris/pray for the parents,"' the Times reports.

It is Ash Wednesday, February 10

Ash Wednesday, a day of fasting, is the first day of Lent in Western Christianity. According to the gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, Jesus Christ spent 40 days fasting in the desert, where he endured temptation by Satan.

Lent originated as a mirroring of this, fasting 40 days as preparation for Easter.

Ash Wednesday derives its name from the practice of blessing ashes made from palm branches blessed on the previous year's Palm Sunday, and placing them on the heads of participants to the accompaniment of the words "Repent, and believe in the Gospel" or "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return".

Everyone needs a little bit of Help: From Bread Seller to Model - The Story of Olajumoke Orisaguna

Her story from rags to fame is extra-ordinary but real. All she did was "waka pass" (walk past) a TY Bello's shoot for British-Nigerian rapper Tinie Tempah. And then TY extended a little help to her.

TY Bello is a famous Nigerian photographer and artist (from the Gospel group - KUSH). She was doing a photo shoot when this bread seller stumbled past the set. Well she thought she added a little "zing" to the shoot, so she continued with the photo shoot.

After the session, she found that she really needed to find the bread seller. She then posted on her Instagram page asking for anyone who knew the lady.

TY Bello’s assistant went back to the shoot scene and found her.

Olajumoke said that someone told her that he saw her on Facebook and that TY was looking for her. So she hung around the scene awaiting TY Bello.

According to TY Bello,

Mbaka: Priest, Politician Or Renegade? By Reuben Abati

Catholic priests in Nigeria have always captured the public imagination, some of them have served in government positions, some were prominent in the fight and struggle for democracy, some of them have proved their mettle as poets, teachers, musicians, social critics, and public affairs commentators, but Rev. Fr. Ejike Camillus Anthony Ebenezer Mbaka is a cut above the rest, not necessarily in terms of intellect or persona, but in terms of how he has been able to use the pulpit to acquire a rock star status.

It is therefore not surprising that everything about him is with a touch of the histrionic. This is exactly what happened when he was transferred, last week, from a parish where he had served for 20 years: from Christ the King Parish, GRA Enugu, to Our Lady of the Rosary Parish, Umuchigbo, Njinike, Enugu. Characteristically, this radical priest and social activist turned what should be a routine administrative posting by his Bishop into a melodrama and an assault on the authority of the Church. You would think he had been sentenced to a jail term, the way he whined and wept and appealed to sympathy.

Series: The Eagle in the Storm. Part 3 - Strive Masiyiwa

This is part 3 of the series - The Eagle in the storm. Click here to read Part one (Introduction), Part 2a and Part 2b.

__Protect the root of your business.

A young man and his father were watching a huge fire coming down from the hills towards their family vineyard. At first, the young man tried to organize buckets of water but it was clear that the fire would engulf everything and consume the vineyard. Then to his surprise he saw the old man pick up an axe and run towards the vines. Systematically he began to cut the vines, leaving only the roots.

"We must protect the root, my son. Do as I show you."

And with this they saved a business that was several generations old.

Every business has a root, and you must know that root. You must be able to protect that root, when things are tough. Sometimes protecting that root looks cruel, but you must protect it at all costs. Sometimes it can come down to reducing activity to the bare minimum, with just a handful of staff. Your most valuable resource will always be good people.

Series: The Eagle in a storm (Part 2b). - Strive Masiyiwa

This is the third in the series. The first one can be read here while the second one can be read here

__Imagining new wealth creation models.

The talk with my Japanese friend had left me thinking deeply about how we in Africa think about wealth. Maybe, just maybe, there was another way to think about it?

Imagine if my teachers had taught me that we are "very rich" because we produce some of the smartest entrepreneurs in Africa… people with the know-how and vision to transform our minerals into such great innovations and products that we no longer export our raw materials all over the world!

From then on, every time I visited a country (or even a major city), and watched its economic activity, particularly places doing well, I would reflect on its "wealth creation model."

__Imagine a wealth creation model that doesn’t require any raw material endowment, like Silicon Valley, or Singapore!

Series: The Eagle in a storm (Part 2a) - Strive Masiyiwa

This is the second in the series of "The Eagle in a Storm. Click here to read Part 1.

__Changing our "wealth creation model."

Ever since I started school, my teachers taught me that our country was "rich" because we had many minerals, and we'd recite the list of minerals. By the time I finished secondary school, I not only knew my country was "rich," but that Africa itself was "rich" because we had so many natural resources.

Even though I didn't study geology, I could almost tell you where all these precious minerals and other resources were found: oil, diamonds, platinum, gold, copper… in places like Congo, there were names of some things I couldn’t even pronounce.

__Yes, Africa is so rich!!!

As a young student, if I thought about what the global buyers of Africa’s natural resources then did with them, it was only ever a superficial thought. But I soon realized something didn't add up…

Series: The eagle in a storm (Part 1 - Intro) - Strive Masiyiwa

Strive Masiyiwa, Founder and CEO of Econet Wireless begins the series - The eagle in the storm.

This is Part 1 - Intro. It is a must read.

The new year opened with turmoil in the Chinese stock markets as prices fell dramatically, leading to a global selloff. In just one week, global stock markets lost over $2 trillion US dollars! Other news in the global markets saw the price of a barrel of crude oil fall below $35 per barrel, down from a high of $62 per barrel less than 12 months ago. That’s down 50% in 12 months and 71% in 24 months!

Since the beginning of last year, 2015, the price of copper has fallen by 30%; iron ore is down by 42%; platinum has also been a disaster, losing more than half its value from less than three years ago. Agricultural commodities have not fared much better on global markets. Last week the South African rand hit an all-time low of 16:1 against the United States dollar and it’s still falling!

Your small business in Harare, Lagos or Nairobi may not have anything to do with China, or with any commodity like oil, iron ore, or platinum, so you might be asking yourself, “What’s that got to do with me?” Answer: EVERYTHING! It has everything to do with you, and its impact is going to be very personal... Brace yourself, there’s a storm on its way!

The #savekehindeadebiyi campaign started mid-November and ended mid-January; completing a 60day campaign period raising a total amount of one million, twenty four thousand four hundred and seventy naira (N1,024,407.00).

The success of this campaign could not have been possibly if not for the donations from well-meaning Nigerians who were moved by Kehinde’s story on the donate-ng crowdfunding portal – https://donate-ng.com/project/73.

Just about the time donate-ng launched its services: the donate-ng team saw Kehinde’s story on Linda Ikeji’s blog and decided to run with the story. You can call it “backing up your words with your money or vis-visa”. With this achievement, donate-ng has proven crowdfunding is possible in Nigeria.
