American woman kidnapped in Nigeria by masked gunmen who stormed her Christian school

An American woman working as a Christian missionary in central Nigeria was kidnapped Monday morning, the website of the Free Methodist Church and a security source revealed on Tuesday.

'Early this morning we received a report that Reverend Phyllis Sortor, our missionary in Nigeria, was abducted from the Hope Academy compound in Emiworo, Kogi State, Nigeria by several persons,' the church said.

According to a report by AFP, a group of masked gunmen raided Hope Academy, the school that Sorter and her church built in the village of Emiworo around 10am.

Islamic State In Syria Abducts At Least 150 Christians

Islamic State militants have abducted not less than 150 people from Assyrian Christian villages in northeastern Syria they had raided, Christian Syrian activists said on Tuesday. Reuters have more:

"A Syrian Christian group representing several NGOs inside and outside the country said it had verified at least 150 people missing, including women and the elderly, who had been kidnapped by the militants. “We have verified at least 150 people who have been adducted from sources on the ground,” Bassam Ishak, president of the Syriac National Council of Syria, whose family itself is from Hasaka, told Reuters from Amman.

Earlier the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 90 were abducted when the militants carried out dawn raids on rural villages inhabited by the ancient Christian minority west of Hasaka, a city mainly held by the Kurds.

The United States condemned the attacks in Hasaka and called for the immediate and unconditional release of the civilians taken captive. The State Department said hundreds of others remain trapped in villages surrounded by Islamic State fighters in violence that has displaced more than 3,000 people."

Christian Groups Pray For Nigeria

CONCERNED with the state of affairs of things in the country, a prayer session tagged: “Women Prayer Summit,” was recently held in Lagos.

It was organised by two women Christian bodies: Blessed Hands Ministry and Choice Women Fellowship International. The prayer session was focused on economy, family, judiciary and security.

At the opening session, the prime convener, Sister Elfreda Nike Akintewe of Brooklyn Tabernacle, USA, said the inspiration to organise a prayer for Nigeria came through a vision she had about three years ago. She explained that the vision moved her, but the encouragement she got from Broklyn Terbanacle, which is a prayer church, made her to reach out to some people and Christian organisations in Nigeria.

She stated that the summit is not under the influence of any political party or struggle. “It is all about praying for peace to reign in the country,” she said.

CAN denies collecting N7billion bribe, demands probe

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has denied a claim by a Borno State-based pastor that President Goodluck Jonathan gave the leadership of the association N7billion to campaign for his re-election.

The allegation followed an earlier one by the Rivers State governor and Director General of the Buhari campaign organisation, Rotimi Amaechi, who recently said Pastors were given N6billion to work against Muhammadu Buhari and for the president. However, Musa Dikwa, the Executive Director of the Voice of Northern Christian Movement, told reporters in Kaduna, Thursday, that CAN was actually given N7billion, not N6billion.

A statement by the General Secretary of CAN, Musa Asake, said the body has no knowledge of “any N7 billion transaction as alleged by Musa Dikwa who claims to be the Executive Director of a non-existent group, Voice of Northern Christian Movement”.

The statement also said CAN was not a political party, let alone get involved in partisan politics.
“Christians who are members of CAN belong to different political parties. It is therefore surprising to hear that CAN is campaigning for one candidate,” Mr. Asake said.

Featured Story: Strip Club Owner Leaves Business for Higher Calling

Aaron Bekkela will never forget the day his eyes were opened to the reality of his career choice. “My daughter came home,” he recalls. “They had a career day at their school, and she comes bouncing through the door, ‘Oh guess what we get to do,’ you know and all excited about it.”

Aaron wasn’t as excited as his daughter about career day. As the co-owner of a strip club in Colorado, it meant talking about exotic dancers and heavy drinking. He confesses, “Your daughter can’t go to work with you because what you do is disgusting.  I obviously was embarrassed about what I did. It was shameful.”

His club has since been gutted and under-construction … but returning to the space, he remembers the scene well. “A typical night in here, lights, very loud,” he remembers.  Pointing to a small staircase, he says, “This was where you would walk down. The stages were here. There were three; one here, one in the middle and one off to the side.”

His father owned a chain of strip clubs so to Aaron, it was a normal part of life. But his dad’s frequent disappearances and affairs weighed heavily on his heart. Aaron explains, “What do you do when you see your mom crying off and on your entire—I don’t know, as long as I can remember growing up, she was sad. But I’ve always been very introverted so whatever was going on, I absolutely kept it to myself.”

The New Movie “David and Goliath” will Outshine “Noah” and “Exodus” – Tim Chey

At a recent press junket, director Tim Chey discussed the differences between his upcoming ‘David and Goliath’ movie and the other two, ‘Noah’ and ‘Exodus.’

“Well first off, I’m not only a director, but also an evangelist,” says Chey who has spoken at some of the largest churches in the U.S. and abroad. “So obviously I’m not going to make a film that’s Biblically not correct or does not give honor to the Lord.”

‘David and Goliath’ is considered one of the big three Bible movies hitting theatres after “Noah” and “Exodus: Gods and Kings.” The film wrapped principal photography in North Africa and in studios in London and opens as a platform release nationwide on April 3.

Chey refers to the backlash of the film ‘Noah’ which many Christian pastors and leaders shunned. The film still was a box office hit at $120 million, but Christians stayed away in droves.

“There are no rock monsters helping David unfortunately,” Chey jokes to the laughter of the reporters. “But kidding aside, I wanted to make a film that will reinvigorate the kind of faith the future King of Israel had, namely fighting a giant with a zero percent chance of defeating him outside of God.”

Church universities can’t be free because they cost money to build, maintain' — Foursquare GO

The General Overseer of Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria, Reverend Felix Meduoye, said people should not expect church-owned universities to offer free education because they are difficult and costly to run without government support.

Church-owned universities are forced to charge high tuition fees because it is a costly venture to build and effectively run schools without access to government subsidies.

This was stated by Reverend Felix Meduoye, the General Overseer of Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria, which owns and runs the Macpherson University, Ogun State, Sun News reports.

Speaking with journalists as part of activities marking the church’s Diamond Jubilee, Meduoye said the public must not expect free education in faith-based schools because running a schools is an expensive adventure but one foundation that I must lay here is that schools cost a lot of money, not only to build but also in running them," he said.

He continued, "You may say, let them make everything free since they are churches. But you know that the church also has primary responsibilities, not only to man but also to God, for the salvation of the human soul. And it is an expensive adventure and expensive project too."

Northern CAN, Christian Elders distance themselves from Buhari endorsement

Buhari
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Northern States and Abuja, has dissociated itself from the purported endorsement of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari.

This came as National Christian Elders Forum, on Sunday, also dissociated itself from the purported endorsement, describing the group as “unaccredited and unrecognised.”

Buhari was said to have been endorsed for the March 28 election by a group, Northern Christian Leaders Eagle-Eye Forum, led by one Pastor Aminchi Habu and was also offered a copy of the Holy Bible.

Reacting, the Public Relations Officer of CAN (19 Northern States and Abuja), Mr Sunny Oibe, said Buhari might have fallen into wrong hands, because that group was not known.

“There is no group like that in Northern Nigeria. I want Buhari to note that those people are impostors. The church in the North is led by ArchBishop Peter Jatto. We have not and cannot endorse Buhari, because he has not told us that he is sorry for his alleged involvement in the post-election violence of 2011.

10 Signs Your Prayer Life Needs Help

No doubt, sometimes we find it hard to pray, not because we have lost our faith in God but probably because of circumstances surrounding us at the moment. If we don't try to get back to God and in the process, get used to not praying, it often leads to us struggling with our faith and our prayer life begins to head down the drain.

Here are 10 signs your prayer life is struggling and how you can take back control of this blessed privilege of access to Our Heavenly Father.

1. You say you’re going to pray but never start.

You know you need to pray, you know it would enhance your life and yet you continue to postpone doing it. There is no set formula or format for prayer. Just simply start. It can be in the shower, first thing in the morning or on the ride into work. Start working it into your day and don’t put this off for another day.

2. Avoiding Prayer Meetings

Do you dodge prayer meetings at church, telling yourself “I’m not in that ministry.” Newsflash, prayer is the ministry of every believer. There are indeed intercessors and those who find prayer more easily than others, but that doesn't mean you should avoid prayer meetings. Make it a point to visit the next one at your church to help you get over this hump because being in the prayer group helps to enhance your prayer life a great deal.

3. You are easily distracted during prayer time.

'I Will Not Forget My Sisters'; World Would Care More If Chibok Schoolgirls Were From Rich, Powerful Family, Says Malala Yousafzai

Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai said on the 300th day anniversary of the kidnapping of the Nigerian schoolgirls by terror group Boko Haram that the international community would be trying much harder to get them freed if they belonged to rich and powerful parents. The over 200 schoolgirls taken from the town of Chibok are believed to have been married off to jihadists.

"Nigerian leaders and the international community can and must do much more to resolve this crisis and change their weak response to date. If these girls were the children of politically or financially powerful parents, much more would be done to free them. But they come from an impoverished area of northeast Nigeria and sadly little has changed since they were kidnapped," Yousafzai said in a statement on Saturday.

"These young women risked everything to get an education that most of us take for granted. I will not forget my sisters. We cannot forget them. We must demand their freedom until they are reunited with the families and back in school, getting the education they so desperately desire," she added.

Despite the promises of the Nigerian army that everything will be done to get the girls released, there has been little progress on the issue since the kidnappings took place back in April 2014.

Boko Haram has captured several towns across Nigeria, leading to heavy clashes with the army, sometimes leaving entire villages decimated and burned down. The jihadists have often targeted Christians, killing entire congregations in a mission to establish an Islamic caliphate in the region.

Most recently the terror group has set its sights on the neighboring countries of Chad and Cameroon, where it has also engaged in heavy battles with the local armies.

Boko Haram: 200,000 Christians at Risk of Massacre in Nigeria

Boko Haram forces appear poised to attack Maiduguri, a city of 2 million in northeast Nigeria -- meaning that 200,000 Christians could be at risk of slaughter by the Islamist terror group, say U.S. intelligence officials and experts on Nigeria.

"An attack on Madiguri is very likely," said J. Peter Pham, director of the Africa Project at the Atlantic Council, echoing U.S. intelligence officials. Pham believes, as do other experts, that Boko Haram has already placed "sleeper cells" among the tide of refugees who have fled the group's murderous rampage through Africa's most populous nation. "They've done it everywhere else they've gone," said Pham. "So why not Maiduguri?"

One big concern is the large number of Christians in the city -- about 200,000, most of them Roman Catholic. In previous attacks, Boko Haram has offered Nigerian Christians the opportunity to convert or be killed. Already, 200 Christian churches have been lost to the group's onslaught.

Strategically, success in Maiduguri would provide Boko Haram with a launching point for further attacks on the neighbouring states of Cameroon, Chad and Niger, all of whose territory were once part of an Islamic caliphate that lasted six centuries, ending in the 1300's. Boko Haram declared its own caliphate in the region last year.

Nigerian Gospel Music Artistes To Watch Out For in 2015

Nigeria's rapidly growing Gospel music industry did not go unnoticed in 2014. With 2015 in full gear already, this article examines those artistes who are poised to make a splash in the music industry this year.

Nosa

Shadrack Nosakhare 'Nosa' Omoregie made one of the biggest news nationwide in 2012 when he was signed on to Chocolate City, a label known for its keen interest in secular artistes. Nosa also released his heart-warming gospel-cum-inspirational album "Open Doors" on the label and it was a hit, with singles such as I'II Always Pray for You and I Go Stay earning him a mention beyond Gospel circles. The Edo-born singer, song-writer and producer was one of the most decorated gospel singers last year. Let's hope he brings his 'A' to the middle of the hall this year.

Preye

Preye was, indeed, a revelation of 2014. His debut album "My Script' produced a song which became a national favourite in no time, in the form of Ebezina. It even made it into the MTN Caller Tunes chart. The inspiring song enjoyed wide acceptability and was sang by most choristers, worship leaders and gospel artistes nationwide. Will he continue on the same path in 2015? Only time will tell.

Solomon Lange

Solomon Lange made his huge presence felt in 2014 with the album "Grateful" and, according to various sources, it is considered a trend-setter. However, the talents of the abundantly talented Abuja-based gospel star are best enjoyed live on stage.

We went into stomach infrastructure long before politicians did – Meduoye, Foursquare G.O

Reverend Felix Meduoye is the General Overseer of Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria. He is one of those that frown at prophecies of doom about Nigeria especially as regards the 2015 general elections. According to him, God is interested in Nigeria, and He will see the country through her present predicament.

As part of activities to mark the Diamond Jubilee celebration of the church, the G.O recently hosted select journalists in his Lagos office, where he spoke on varied issues, including the attitude of the church towards the needy:

As Foursquare Gospel Church marks its Diamond Jubilee in Nigeria, how has the organization fared in the last 60 years?

For me, 60 years in itself is an achievement because, as it were, even beginning from Jesus’s coming to us, the gospel has always been a seed. And you know, when you plant a seed, you have the possibility of that seed either being scorched by the sun or you find that birds can come by and pick that seed so that it will never even germinate at all. It can also be among thorns and can be choked to death. So, many missionaries have come to this country today but we thank God because we can comfortably say that the Foursquare Church, Nigeria, is a seed that has been sown on a good ground. It has not only budded, it has grown. And by the special grace of the almighty God, today, Foursquare Church is in the 36 states and the federal capital of Nigeria. We have about 3,200 branches in Nigeria and we are all over the country including the northeast. Not only that, Foursquare has also gone to neighbouring countries such as Benin Republic, Togo, Gambia and a lot of other west African countries. The church has extended the gospel from Nigeria to all these places. In fact, as we speak, the Foursquare, Nigeria is currently doing some jobs back in America, from where the gospel came to Nigeria. The church from Nigeria is presently working in America, India and other foreign countries. So, on that note, I would say that by the special grace of God, the church has been impactful and a blessing, not only to Nigeria but even beyond this country. And of course, nationally, in the community of churches, Foursquare happens to be one of the founders of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), which has made great impact in this country.

Is the church doing anything to contribute to the success and peaceful conduct of the 2015 general elections?

Pastor Adeboye Responds To Amaechi’s N6Bn Allegations

The General Overseer of Redeemed Christian Church of God, Rev. Enoch Adeboye responded to Governor Rotimi Amaechi's claims that some pastors have received N6Bn to campaign for President Jonathan.

The preacher addressed the issue in a Facebook post where he took an approach that has been rare in this election season - a path of sanity and gentleness. Pastor Adeboye who is thought of as a close ally of President Goodluck asked any pastor who has collected such money to kindly return it.

Pastors Received N6b From PDP To Campaign Against Buhari?

Report has started to gather steam that some undisclosed high echelon of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have paid N6 billion to Christian clerics to campaign against the presidential aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Gen. Muhammadu Buhari.

TheNationOnlineNg Publication revealed what the Director-General of Buhari Campaign Organisation, Rotimi Amaechi, has to say concerning the speculations.

Governor Amaechi expressed surprise that the compromised pastors were circulating documents to Nigerians, where they alleged that the APC and its presidential candidate would Islamize the entire country, if Buhari is elected as President during the February 14 election.

The Governor of Rivers State also stressed that Nigerians were too enlightened for an individual or a political party to Islamise the whole country, asking the bribed clerics to return the money to the coffers of the Federal Government.

He said: “Some pastors collected N6 billion and they are circulating documents and telling you not to vote for an Hausa man, not to vote for a Muslim because they want to Islamise Nigeria. Tell them to return our N6 billion.

Do You Agree? Nigeria is one of the 'worst places' for Christians

The author of a monthly report on Christian persecution in various countries has ruled Nigeria as one of the least favourable nations for Christians to be in.

Raymond Ibrahim pens the monthly report "Muslim Persecution of Christians", which has chronicled instances of persecution against Christians in multiple countries since July 2011.

The "Muslim Persecution of Christians" reported is published by former US Ambassador to the UN, John R. Bolton's Gatestone Institute.

Mr Ibrahim told the Washington Times that more than 1,000 churches have been destroyed in a four-year period by the extremist group Boko Haram. In addition, he revealed, the group laid 200 churches to waste from August to October alone as it waged a campaign of terror in the north-eastern region of Nigeria.

Given the magnitude of persecution directed against Christians in Nigeria, Mr Ibrahim called it "one of the worst" places for Christianity.

Bakare Lampoons Christian Leaders For Rejecting Osinbajo as CAN, PFN Allegedly Endorse Jonathan

The coming election has practically taken over the Nigerian news feed with endless conversations going on via social media, at the corner of every school, church, office and street, as citizens look forward to the day of the election to choose a worthy leader, who will to govern the nation for the next four years.

Senior Pastor at the Latter Rain Assembly and founder of the Save Nigeria Group, Pastor Tunde Bakare, has slammed the leadership of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) for what he called “secret endorsement of President Goodluck Jonathan”.

The cleric at the weekend lashed out at CAN and PFN for allegedly dumping Prof. Yemi Osinbajo just like they allegedly did to him when he was running mate to General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) in 2011 presidential election.

Osinbajo is running mate to Buhari in the 2015 presidential election on the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC). Bakare, in his sermon on Sunday, said he learnt that the Christian leaders held a secret meeting where they allegedly endorsed Jonathan for a second term in office. He wondered why both Christian bodies dumped their own, who he said was not a “radical” person.

May God Forgive You For Hindering People From Receiving From God through Prophet Joshua!” - Grace Venn

A former member of the Redeemed Christian Church Of God named Grace Venn has vented anger at church authorities for ‘deceiving her’ about controversial Nigerian Pastor T.B. Joshua.

In an impassioned rant on YouTube, Grace revealed that the strong stance of prominent leaders in The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) against T.B. Joshua had affected 'millions' negatively.

“I have asked God to help me to forgive all these so-called Christian "mighty" ministers of God for misleading me and millions of people for decades now, accusing Prophet T.B. Joshua and SCOAN to be the devil's handiwork,” she irately commented on one of Joshua’s numerous online videos.

“Because of the attack on Prophet T.B. Joshua by CAN, PFN and by all these great men of God and the members of their churches, millions of souls like me and members of my family who could have received our deliverance through Prophet T.B. Joshua have suffered for nothing,” she further alleged.

The Living Faith Church, also known as Winners Chapel on Sunday, February 1, 2015 rebuffed claims in the media over statements made by its Founder/General Overseer, Bishop David Oyedepo during the visit of President Goodluck Jonathan to the church headquarters at Ota, Ogun State.

Speaking through a statement by the resident clergy of the church, Pastor Ubong Ntia, the church stated that at no time during the service did Bishop Oyedepo vow to unleash the gates of hell on those opposing the re-election of President Jonathan, stating that the statements were false as those spreading the rumours did not get a clip of the service prior to their claims.

The statement read: “There was nowhere, nor was there any time the following prayer or words were uttered by the Church or the Bishop: ‘I will open the gates of hell to anyone who opposes you’, or ‘I will open the gates of hell to anyone who opposes the peace of this nation’.

Nigerian Pastor 'Butchered' to Death by Muslim Herdsmen; Remembered as Dedicated Servant to the Poor Who Educated Over 400 Kids for Free

A popular Nigerian pastor, who is touted as a dedicated servant to the poor, was "butchered" to death last week on his way back from pastoral duties by Muslim Fulani herdsmen, whom some say could be linked to the terrorist group Boko Haram.

As Morning Star News reports, pastor Joshua Adah, who founded and operated a school that provides over 400 kids with free education in the village of Bantaje, fell victim to the wrath of Muslim extremists belonging to the Fulani ethnolinguistic group, the same herdsmen that also reportedly attacked Nigerian Christian communities last week.

According to unnamed supporters of Adah's ministry, Adah was on his way back to his mission station last Friday after attending an "evangelistic outreach" event when his car broke down and he had to pull over on the side of the road.

Let Us Pray!

Christians have been charged to pray for the nation as the general election approaches.

Addressing the 305 Christian pilgrims who recently returned from the holy land, the Chairman, Ogun State Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board, Bishop Oludotun Ogunseye, admonished them to pray for the socio-economic and political growth of Ogun State in particular and the nation in general as they reflect on the lessons learnt during the pilgrimage in their day-to-day activities.

The chairman, Ogun State Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board, Bishop Oludotun Ogunseye, who was speaking at the thanksgiving service held for the pilgrims at the Government House Chapel, Oke-Igbein, Abeokuta, noted that the importance of the journey, during which they visited many places of historical significance, was to expose them to the life and times of Jesus Christ, and this, he noted should not be in vain.

Reading a text from the Holy Bible, the President, Ogun Baptist Conference, Rev. Segun Jaiyesimi, called on Christians to love their neighbours and be their brother’s keeper.
