A Reflection: You and your words. - Strive Masiyiwa

One day after attending a church service in London, I spent several hours going through bookshops looking for a bible translation called The Living Bible. There were no Amazon or Internet editions in those days, so I just had to go from shop to shop.

The reason I was looking so determinedly for this translation was because of something that had been preached that morning about the meaning of Matthew 12:35 (based on this translation):

"A good man's speech reveals the rich treasures within him. An evil-hearted man is filled with venom, and his speech reveals it."

Verse 36, shows us that "words" can be "good or evil treasure," and they come out of the way you speak or express yourself on any issue.

Acclaimed Gospel choir Praise Breed Family, with Sam Opeche and friends, are proud to announce their debut album titled Hymns Alive Project Volume 1. Inspired by the need to revive and restore the rich truths imbedded within some of our favourite Hymns, the Hymns Alive Project was created to help listeners fall in love with hymns once again, as spiritual songs, and not just mere recital songs.

To celebrate Christmas and the Holiday season this year, Praise Breed Family have also unveiled the brand new video for ‘To God Be The Glory’, the lead single from their Hymns Alive Project. Originally written by Fanny J. Crosby and released as far back as 1875, Praise Breed Family have updated the popular hymn with a more contemporary sound for the modern audience, arranged and produced by Sam Opeche, Thimmy Abioye and Emmanuel Adeniran.

Filmed and recorded at the renowned Angel Studio in London, the video helps bring the message of the Hymns Alive Project further to life. In the words of Sam Opeche for Praise Breed Family, “may the ageless truths of our God and Christian faith minister to you in a fresh and living way, as you listen to these beautifully rendered songs, in a way you've never heard before”.

To that end, please watch and enjoy the visuals for ‘To God Be The Glory’ below.

The film “Concussion”, starring Will Smith as Dr Bennet Omalu, hits the theatres on December 25th. Concussion is a David vs. Goliath story of Nigerian-born forensic pathologist and neuropathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu, who made the first discovery of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), a football-related brain trauma, in a pro player. It was the autopsy of Pittsburgh Steelers center Mike Webster led to Omalu’s discovery of CTE.

The biopic film also stars Nigerian-British actor Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje who stars as former Chicago Bear player Dave Duerson – who in 2011 committed suicide at the age of 50 so that his brain could be left to researchers studying head injuries among football players and the connection to CTE.

President Muhammadu Buhari’s Christmas message to Nigerians

This is the full text of President Muhammadu Buhari to Christian faithfuls on Christmas day.

I felicitate with all Nigerians, especially our Christian brothers and sisters, on the joyous occasion of this year’s Christmas. On this occasion of the commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ, let us all rededicate ourselves to the virtues of peace, love, honesty, justice, equity, piety, humility and service to others which he taught.

There can be no doubt that a greater manifestation of these virtues and ideals in our lives will immensely help us to become a more united, peaceful, secure and progressive nation. Let us also reach out in love and compassion to fellow Nigerians who are in distress at this period of our nation’s history.

Merry Christmas to you all.

Wish you a very merry Christmas. May the celebration of His birth continue to bring forth wonderful blessings to your homes, Amen

A Prayer for the Christmas Season - Dr Mel Lawrenz

Lord God,

In these weeks leading up to Christmas we long to know the meaning, the power, and the mystery of that great mission whereby you came to save us from our sins.

Help us to focus on the good news that has caused great joy for people around the world and across the ages. We are in awe that the coming of the Lord Jesus has shaped the history of the world and has changed untold millions of lives. We need this gospel in troubled times lest we become cynical, doubtful, fearful, or vengeful. Strengthen our faith during challenging times.

We rejoice in the proclamation of Immanuel, God with us. As Isaiah said, “to us a child is born, to us a son is given and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” [Isaiah 9:6]

We need the governing of the Lord Christ because humanity is so out of control.

We need the “Wonderful Counselor” because we wander in ignorance and foolishness so much of the time.

We need the savior who is “Mighty God,” able to save and preserve.

We need an “Everlasting Father” who protects us and provides not what we think we need but what we truly need.

We need the “Prince of Peace” because of the tensions between the nations of the world, because there are thousands of people whose hearts are dark with thoughts of murder and terrorism, and because even friends and family members so often battle with each other.

We have always needed a savior. Now more than ever.

In the name of the Jesus the Christ, Son of God, Savior.

Amen.

THE CHURCH TODAY AND HUMANITY Part 3

In part one and two, we went through our responsibility as Christians and the church to embrace humanity and cater to the needs of others. This is our mandate, and should be our focus.

People have various needs; and monetary donation is not the only channel to meet such needs. Needs can be physical, emotional, mental/ intellectual or spiritual. As Christians we must be able to identify the needs of people around us, positioning ourselves to meet such needs as much as we can and referring them to appropriate channels where we are not in the position to help.

Physical needs can be catered for by meeting the particular material need of the individual such as money, clothing, shoes or other physical and tangible needs. You may also empower an individual to be able to adequately sponsor himself in these areas e.g. by setting up a business or engaging them in a skill acquisition programme. The latter is actually better! It is unchristian to make men perpetually dependent on you in helping them!

Emotional needs can be addressed by giving a listening ear, showing care, encouragement or acts of agape love, but should be done with utmost caution. Many have won people to Christ just by being there for them and showing Christ’s love in great dimensions. It is of this that Jesus says ‘Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your father who is in heaven’- (Matt 5:16).

Photo: christianpf.com
Mental/ Intellectual needs can be met by giving sound advice to an individual in an area he seems to be in a fix. Some people may come to you for advice; others may not. It helps to be sensitive enough to notice your neighbour’s plight and rely on the wisdom of God to say the right thing that will help his situation.

Spiritual needs can be met by intercessory prayers or prayers of agreement with someone going through a difficulty. Remember ‘the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much’- (James 5:16b). Your prayer for or with a person can be the force that will transform his life and save him from impending danger or difficult situations. Instead of gossiping about his shortcomings, spend time in prayer over his life. PRAYER CHANGES EVERYTHING!

In conclusion, let’s all work towards meeting the needs of those around us however we can, whenever we can. We can find fulfillment in transforming lives and making a difference in the world, if we just open our hearts to looking beyond ourselves or things that are temporal to the things that are eternal.

CAN protests against move to list Nigeria among Arab nations to fight ISIS

Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, President of CAN
Last night, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), protested the attempt by the current All Progressives Congress, APC, government to enlist Nigeria among Arab nations to fight ISIS.

According to international reports, Saudi Arabia is building a coalition of 34 Muslim/Arab countries to fight ISIS and Nigeria was named among the 34.

A statement late last night by the General Secretary of CAN, Rev. Musa Asake, said: “This singular gesture of the Buhari government betrays so much, and tends to confirm our fears that underneath everything this government is doing, there is an agenda with strong Islamic undertones, aimed at undermining Nigeria’s pluralistic character and neutrality regarding government’s affiliation to any one religion.

“While joining hands with other countries to fight ISIS is something good, our country must not be tagged as a Muslim or Arab nation. Christians must make a public statement showing their discontent on this development which portends great danger to national unity and integration.”

President Obama Appoints Nigerian ‘Adewale Adeyemo’ As Deputy NSA for International Economic Affairs

President Barack Obama has appointed a 34 year old Nigerian, Adewale ‘Wally’ Adeyemo who served in top roles at the Treasury Department to succeed Caroline Atkinson as his deputy national security adviser for international economic affairs.
Adeyemo  has served in Obama’s administration since 2009. He joined the White House’s National Economic Council as deputy director. He was the Treasury’s lead negotiator on the currency agreement that was part of the Pacific trade deal.
According to President Obama,  “For the past four years, I have relied on Caroline Atkinson, most recently as my Deputy National Security Advisor for International Economics, as we’ve navigated pressing challenges to the global economy.
“As my representative at the G-7 and G-20, she played a key role in coordinating our response to international financial crises, worked with our allies to devise and implement targeted economic sanctions to advance our national security goals, played a vital role in our economic engagements with China, and helped to achieve breakthrough agreements on climate that will strengthen our economy and our security.
“I’ve relied on, and benefited from, Caroline’s knowledge and judgment and, as she concludes her tenure on my national security team, I am deeply appreciative of her service.
“I am grateful that Caroline’s work will be carried on by Adewale “Wally” Adeyemo, who has served in my administration since 2009. At the Treasury Department, he was part of the team that helped coordinate our response to the global recession, laying the foundation for renewed growth at home and abroad.
“He helped establish the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and he’s been our point person on a range of international economic issues, including negotiations on strong currency agreements around the Trans Pacific Partnership. I will be calling on Wally’s intellect, judgment and dedication as we sustain America’s global economic leadership, which reinforces our national security, and as we work with allies and partners around the world to create jobs and opportunity for all our people.”
Adeyemo holds a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley and another degree from Yale Law School.

New Music: Apala Fusion ~ Awhybaiz Ft. Maya & Owen Charles

Prolific Bass Minstrel, song writer and Sociologist AYO OLATEJU aka AWHYBAIZ is focused on creating a very dynamic infusion of African culture and ethics into Modern day gospel music.

His style and approach towards music is deeply enrooted in culture with the tonal usage of the Yorùbá language in expressing what has been divinely delivered to him as the gospel message, this he also aids with the use of english in constructing & interpreting his lyrics.

The AWHYBAIZ brand is enriched with very unique African vibes;so cultural but highly spiritual; a victorious sound set to boost the confidence of all believers and to further liberate the unbelievers.

The Ojó Òní á sanmí composer always dazzles in his efforts to further propagate the gospel of Christ…and with the use of his bass guitar he has succeeded in creating a very vibrant and energetic sound for himself.

The ideology behind the song Apala Fusion is derived from Apala music;a very melodious yorùbá traditional music, highly rich in percussions. Like the name implies, it is the infusion of Apala music into other styles/genres such as soul, a touch of rock, pop, and even fuji…the song is written and composed by AYOMIOTIITAN OLATEJU as inspired by the Spirit of the Living God…It is a soul winning and motivational song for all Christians helping them to further declare their salvation and victory in Christ; Powered by YAHWEH(OBA ÌMÚSE).

THE CHURCH TODAY AND HUMANITY Part 2

In part one, we went over the importance of humanity to us as Christians who make up the church and our responsibility to share our blessings with those around us. There is no eternal value in storing up treasures here on earth; heaven should be our ultimate goal. The key to this is what we invest our time and money on here

Looking at the church as an organisation, we need to review the focus of our programmes and activities to be in line with God wants.

Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.”(James 1:27 (KJV))

External religious worship (religion as it is expressed in outward acts) that is pure and unblemished in the sight of God the Father is this: to visit and help and care for the orphans and widows in their affliction and need, and to keep oneself unspotted and uncontaminated from the world” (James 1: 27 (AMP)

It is so easy for our focus to be on regular donations or offerings from members, events, society anniversaries, or building projects and not on making a difference in the lives of the broken, helpless or needy. We can’t boast of being successful as a church when those around us are left to wallow in despair.

Remember the parable of the Good Samaritan? The Priest and the Levite both refused to help a man who was robbed, stripped, wounded and left to die by the way side. In fact, the priest may have been on his way to the synagogue that morning and did not want to be late for the Sabbath service. Perhaps the Levite was meant to lead worship that morning and had thought, ‘If I wait to help this man, I will most likely be late.’ ‘Legitimate excuses’ you may say, but in Jesus’ book, no excuse is valid enough when you turn the other eye on those who need help. It was a Samaritan who saw him; had compassion on him and exhibited God’s love by cleaning him up, treating his wounds, and ensuring he was adequately cared for. The Samaritan was the farthest from him by relationship but the closest to him by love, compassion and care: sheer humanity.

We cannot lay claim to the fact that we are true Christians if we do not cater for the needs of others. The English translation of a very popular Yoruba song says, ‘Your neighbour is that person around you whom you are in a position to help. Take care of him.’

It’s high time we take up our responsibility as a church and focus on what is truly important. Helping others has nothing to do with their faith but everything to do with our Christianity.

Godman Akinlabi's Elevation Church moves to new site in Lagos

Godman Akinlabi's The Elevation Church will be worshipping at its new site - The Pistis Centre - today, 13th of December 2015.

The Pistis centre is located beside KFA Event Centre, Between 4th and 5th Roundabout, Lekki-Epe Expressway, Lekki, Lagos.

Cobhams will be ministering at the service today

According to the church,

The Elevation church journey began 5 years ago on the 10th of October 2010. In the early days, services were held at Magnolia hall, City Mall, Onikan, Lagos. Within a year, we moved into the PISITS centre located at No 3 Remi Olowude Way, By 2nd Lekki Roundabout, Oniru, Lekki, with crowd capacity of 750.

In the course of 4 years, we have grown in leaps and bounds. To ensure adequate accommodation as a result of this growth, we increased number of service to four services. Still it became clear that we were bursting at the seams. To remedy this, we made plans to relocate to the New Pistis Centre!

Located at Elevation Drive, Beside KFA Event Center, Between 4th & 5th Roundabout, Lekki-Epe Expressway, Lekki, Lagos, the sprung structure at the New Pistis Centre stands at 14.6 meters high, 67.8 meters long and an impressive width of 36.5 meters. With architectural aesthetics of a spaceship, the sprung structure also houses our junior church, and the main auditorium is built to accommodate a crowd capacity of 1,750. The structure is thermally and acoustically insulated to minimize noise transfer and maintain balance temperature.

At the PISTIS centre, there is room for everyone including our cars as it comes with ample parking space. Also at the New Pistis, the younger church members are catered for with a fantastic junior church equipped with tools needed for proper teaching and engagement of our teens and kids.

An increased capacity invariably translates to more community impact and wider reach in spreading the saving news of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

There is so much more we could share about our New Pistis Centre, but it is better experienced.

We invite you to get ready with us as we move. We intend to leave no man behind. Join us.

Kidnappers reduce ransom to N20million for African Bishop and wife

Rt. Rev Gabriel Adebanjo and wife, Dorcas
Kidnappers of Rt. Rev Gabriel Adebanjo, the Bishop of the Lagos Central Diocese of the African Church and his wife have reduced the ransom to N20 million. They had started at N100 million.

The couple was kidnapped in Delta State five days ago when they went to Warri for an adult harvest programme which was supposed to hold the day after they were kidnapped.

The Bishop's driver was shot in the Kidnap process but he has since been stabilised and the bullets have been removed.

According to the church spokesman Chief Femi Adetona, “We are still negotiating. They did not give us opportunity to speak with the bishop. We have mandated our members at Warri to continue the negotiation with them since they would understand their language better. But they give us regular updates as things unfold.”

According to a reprot in a newspaper, Saturday PUNCH, When the bishop took off from Lagos, he would have gone by flight but had to go to Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, to pick his wife where she works and they decided to go by road.

I Belong To You ~ Seyi Alesh & Tomi Favored

On December 7th, 2015, worshipers and music artist couple Seyi Alesh and Tomi Favored collaborated on a special single titled I BELONG TO YOU to celebrate their wedding anniversary. Written and produced by them both, the song highlights the fact that we all belong to God Almighty, the creator.

“We both belong to God and He is the reason we are together now, will remain together by His grace, and ever came together before. Our lives are centered around worshiping Him alone and using our gifts to bless hearts the best way we can” they both state. “Even in marriage, when two people know God and seek after Him diligently knowing He is their creator, they will always meet each other at the feet of God” they quote.

In celebrating their anniversary, they joke about how they certainly can’t invite everyone they know over to the house for lunch…lol (that is one too many plates of iyan and efo to serve naija guests especially); but as musicians, God has given the creative privilege and ability to make something everyone willing can share with them as a couple & that is music.

Church Signs that will make you go hmmm..

There are some Church signs that really make you think twice.

Here are some of the ones I have seen/received.

1. EFCC Church - Would you like to be invited to the EFCC church?  (For those not familiar to this acronym, EFCC in Nigeria stands for Economic and Financial Crimes Commission)

2.  Mountain of Swallowing Problems

3.  Run For Your Life International Chapel

4. Laboratory Church of God

5.  Koboko Night

6.  Who stole my wedding gown?

Here is an interesting parody about Church signs that you would love.

The new X-Men: Apocalypse trailer has some biblical undertones

The new X-Men: Apocalypse trailer has just been released.

The X-Men: Apocalypse is the sequel to 2014's X-Men: Days of Future Past and the ninth instalment in the X-Men film series.

In X-Men: Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant, Apocalypse, awakened after thousands of years and disillusioned with the world he finds, recruits a team of powerful mutants to cleanse humanity and create a new world order.

While being an interesting movie, it makes reference to some topics or events in the Bible. It makes reference to the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel's X-Men universe - Apocalypse. He is referred to as "Yahweh" as in one of the dialogues: "I have been called many things over many lifetimes..Ra, Krishna, Yahweh"

In another dialogue, there is a debate whether he brought about the idea of the four horsemen or "The Bible" copied it from him.

Watch the trailer below. What do you think?

THE CHURCH TODAY AND HUMANITY Part 1

Humanity connotes different things to different people. To some, it simply means ‘being human’ i.e. our fallibility. To others, it connotes core areas that actually define our humanity such as love, hope, fear and faith, and cuts across acts of love and care for mankind, the needy and under privileged.

Relating this concept to the church, both as Christians who make up the body and the church as an organisation, humanity is something important which by all means should not be ignored.

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets”- (Matt. 22: 37-40 (KJV))

Obedience to these commandments is something we need to work towards and it requires us to check our everyday choices and actions. Even the heathen get it, donating millions to charity each year, while we, who are Christ’s very representatives on earth, fold our arms and pump funds into objects of no eternal value.

Think about this: If you have some money and there are many things on your list which you don’t necessarily need, such as upgrading your phone quarterly or changing your wardrobe monthly, but your neighbour comes to you with a sincere need, what will you do? Will you go ahead to feed your want which is actually nothing but an empty desire or will you be noble enough to do something that will transform this person’s life. What would Jesus do in this circumstance? Selah!

Don’t get me wrong, it is good to be rich and prosperous. Yes! It is good to acquire the latest gadgets you need and ensure that you are well dressed at all times; but if you fail to use your riches for the Kingdom mandate, there lies the salient issue. You can work hard to acquire wealth, but in the end what you do with it is what actually matters. Always remember, the one reason you have been blessed is not just for yourself alone but so that you can be a blessing to others.

And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.” (Genesis 12: 2-3 (KJV))

When we are blessed of God, in the words of Martin Luther King Jr.,... we are challenged to rise above the narrow confines of individualistic concerns to broader concerns of all humanity.' There is no eternal value in us refusing to bless others with what we have been blessed with.  We just need to open our hearts to become sensitive to the needs of those around us and meeting those needs.

The parable of Lazarus and the rich man brings this into proper perspective. After years of refusing to share even the crumbs that fell off his table with Lazarus, the rich man ended up begging Lazarus who was in Abraham’s bosom for just some drops of water after death had changed their fates. At this time, the wealth he took so much time acquiring was of no value at all. We need to remind ourselves that we can’t take any of our physical possessions with us when we are gone; we will only be remembered by what we have done.

Lay not for yourselves treasures upon the earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:  But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth or rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also”-( Matt 6: 19-21 (KJV))

In Matthew 19:16-22, when the Young ruler asked Jesus how he may have eternal life, he was shocked and discouraged by Jesus’ answer: ‘Go, sell what you have and give to the poor and follow me’. This ruler had kept all the commandments faithfully, but when it came to the area of giving, he shuddered. This scenario makes us question where his heart really was. What do you have your heart set on? Where is your treasure stored up? Heaven or Earth?
