Pray For Nigeria– Mark Urges Intending Pilgrims

The Senate President, Sen. David Mark, has appealed to intending pilgrims to Israel to put Nigeria in their prayers at this trying time the country’s history.

Mark made the appeal while addressing intending pilgrims from St. Mulumba’s Catholic Chaplaincy at Apo in Abuja, ahead of their departure to the holy land.

He urged the intending pilgrims to devote time to reflect on the situation in Nigeria and commit the country to God for divine intervention.

He cited insecurity as one of the key challenges facing the nation, saying that Nigeria would surmount the challenges with honesty, commitment and resolve by all citizens.

He advised the intending pilgrims to exhibit good conduct.

“Your conduct would go a long way to show that Nigeria is not a country of bad eggs.

“Remember you are going to Israel on religious mission not jamboree or for any commercial interest. You must put Nigeria first in all you do.

“Besides, you must go as a team and return as one group,”Mark said.

He advised them to resist the temptation of absconding as such behaviour was unacceptable and would not be tolerated.

Sharing Love: Something Extra - Nadia Wilder

We walked through the doors of a store last week and it looked like the opening scene of “The Grinch,” only without the joyful countenance on the faces: music blaring, people scurrying and hurriedly clutching armloads of gifts a midst the chaos. It was a bit overwhelming – or, as Cindy Lou Who aptly described, superfluous.

This time of year can easily overwhelm and consume both our lives and our hearts. One glance at the calendar filled with events, gatherings and to-do’s leaves us wondering what more we have left to give. Frankly, it can leave us a little disenchanted with the Christmas season altogether. Several years ago, I found myself struggling with how trite so much of it had become. I was fearful that the baby in the manger, the Savior of the world, was becoming as relevant to our family as the elf on our shelf. I prayerfully considered what we would do with Christmas, how we could share the love of Christ in the midst of the chaos and in the midst of compromise in our consumerist culture.

The answer came through a couple of venues: I stumbled across a blog that was filled with ideas for small, random acts of kindness aimed at spreading kindness and cheer through the season. We stopped asking the questions of what we would do and simply starting asking what could we do to impact as many people as we come in contact with the love of Christ. That Christmas, my children and I prepared dozens of goody bags and candy canes for distribution and set off on a mission to light up faces and hearts all around us. It was amazing to see the change of expression on the faces of those who received even the smallest of gifts. My children began to experience the joy of giving, realizing that even the smallest act of sharing could brighten someone’s day. It was a teachable moment about all things grace, how Christ Himself came as the greatest gift of grace to us and we, in turn, were sharing that grace and His love.

Unbelief Now the World's Third-Largest 'Religion'

A new report on global religious identity shows that while Christians and Muslims make up the two largest groups, those with no religious affiliation -- including atheists and agnostics -- are now the third-largest "religious" group in the world.

The study, released Tuesday (Dec. 18) by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life, found that more than eight in 10 (84 percent) of the world's 7 billion people adheres to some form of religion. Christians make up the largest group, with 2.2 billion adherents, or 23 percent worldwide, followed by Muslims, with 1.6 billion adherents, or 23 percent worldwide.

Close behind are the "nones" -- those who say they have no religious affiliation or say they do not believe in God -- at 1. 1 billion, or 16 percent. That means that about the same number of people who identify as Catholics worldwide say they have no religion.

"One out of six people does not have a religious identity," said Conrad Hackett, a primary researcher and demographer on the study. "But it is also striking that that overwhelming majority of the world does have some type of religious identity. So I think people will be surprised by either way of looking at it."

The next largest groups, the report finds, are Hindus (1 billion people, or 15 percent), Buddhists (500 million people, or 7 percent) and Jews (14 million people, or 0.2 percent). More than 400 million people -- 6 percent -- practice folk traditions from African, Chinese, Native American or Australian aboriginal cultures.
